The country Nigeria consist of thirty six states(36), some are big , some are small and some are very rich while others are poor but the big question we are about to answer right now on this article is which states are the most populated in Nigeria 2017/2018 .

It no longer news that Nigeria is one of the most populated countries in Africa and Nigerian states consist of different local government . Which state is the most populated in Nigeria is one of the most recurring question i have seen many people ask. Looking at the 36 states in Nigeria, which and which are the most populated , that is which one of them has the highest population. This quest brings us to the topic ” Top 10 most populated States in Nigeria 2017 .

To reason behind the creation of this article is that our readers have been trying to get to a resolution concerning  the most populated populated state/states in Nigeria . We have received bunch of mails from our readers and some has placed phone call to us while those that known me personally have accosted me to ask me the most populated states in Nigeria. Today, i am going to be educating you with the updated list of Top 10 Most Populated States In Nigeria 2017 . In year 2016, The National Population Census was suppose to take place but due to the predominant and wide spread of economic crisis and met down, it was pushed forward to 2018.

For the sake of this article, we are going to be working with the last held census and we are also going to be using old figures from various sources to reveal the current populations in major states in Nigeria.

It is quite obvious and easy to comprehend that Lagos state is the most populated city in Nigeria and it has been like this for decades , this is because Lagos is more like a centre of attraction where people from other states go to in search of greener pastures. People leave their state of origin to Lagos with the hope that they can make it there than any other states in Nigeria and this mind set has worked for many especially the celebrities and this business minded people. In 2012, the population of Lagos state revealed 7,682,953 . Lagos State Government disclosed that The population of Lagos is 17.5 million but this figure was not accepted by Nigerian Government as it was said to be unreliable by the National Population Commission of Nigeria.

Lagos has the largest population in Nigeria no doubt about that, needful to say, Lagos is known to be the second fastest-growing city in Africa and the seventh in the world. Lagos state estimated population is 14 million as revealed by the last census.


Kano is the second largest state in Nigeria and this is known by many perhaps not all. As revealed by the last census conducted in 2006, the  population of Kano State had a total of  9,383,682. In time past, Kano was the most populated state in Nigeria but as things went on the table turned around . Looking back to the year 2011, Kano total population was estimated at 11,058,300 while our recent findings reveals that it estimated population is approximately 14million .

3. OYO

The capital of Oyo is Ibadan, this state is the third most populated states in Nigeria. Some time ago, Oyo state population was at 6,617,720 that was in 2007, this figure was revealed by Oyo state Government. The most recent total population of Oyo state is 13,993,752 . Oyo is an inland state in south-western Nigeria, with its capital at Ibadan. Oyo is bounded in the north by Kwara State, in the east by Osun State, in the south by Ogun State and in the west partly by Ogun State and partly by the Republic of Benin. The most recent Oyo state population is 14,993,752 as the total population while the 2016 estimation stand at 13,000,000.


Kaduna state is located in the north central Nigeria, is politically classified as belonging to the now ‘North – West’ zone of the current six (6) Geo – political zones of Nigeria. This state consist of about 59 to 63 different ethnic groups if not more with the exactitude of the number requiring further verification through a genuine field work [Hayab, 2014]. Kaduna state population was once estimated to be 6,066,562 as of the 2006 Nigerian census . At some point it increased to 11,652,844 but right now it is 12,000,000.


As contained in the census figure released in 2006, River state population was 5,185,400, which makes it the fifth most populated state in Nigeria .It capital city is located in Port Harcourt . It is bounded on the South by the Atlantic Ocean, to the North by Imo, Abia and Anambra States, to the East by Akwa Ibom State and to the West by Bayelsa and Delta states. The recent population figure states that the state now has 10,652,844 . The 2016 estimated population is around 11 million.


Katsina State is located in North West zone of Nigeria and the state capital is Katsina. History has it that it was forged out of Kaduna State which can traced back to 1987. The Fulani who are often grouped as Hausa-Fulani are the largest ethnic group in the state. Some years ago, Katsina state population was 5,792,578 . In recent time, the population has increased to 10,102,813 as the total population . But our 2017 estimation puts the state’s population at 10million.


Bauchi is located in the northern part of Nigeria and it state capital is Bauchi. It was formed in the year 1976 when the former North-Eastern State part ways. It originally included the area now in Gombe State, which became a distinct state in 1996. In the census conducted in 2006, the state has a population of 4,653,066, at some point it was 9,052,784 and now it has a total population of 9 million.


This state is found in the southeastern Nigeria and it capital is Awka. The biggest and most popular commercial and industrial cities in Anambra state is Onitsha and Nnewi . Anambra state is most dominated by the Igbos (98% of population) and a small population of Igala (2% of the population) . 2006 census revealed 4,055,048 as the population estimate, Recent estimates claims the state now has 8,352,911 as the total population. The most recent population for 2017 is 8million.


Jigawa state is one of the most populated state in Nigeria , it is mostly populated by the Hausa/Fulani people. Jigawa State have a socio-cultural situation that can be described as homogeneous . In the 2006 census held in Nigeria Jigawa state population figure was4,348,649 while the total population in recent time revealed 8,109,251. The most recent estimation is 8million.


Benue state is the last talking about the top 10 most populated states in Nigeria 2017. Benue state is in the mid-belt region of Nigeria, this state is mostly dominated by by the Tiv and Idoma peoples, they speak Tiv language and Idoma. with a population of about 4,253,641 in 2006 census. The Tiv’s comprises the Etulo’s while the Idoma’s comprises the Ufia’s (Utonkon), the Igede’s, and the Agatu’s. There are other ethnic groups, including the Igede, Etulo, Abakwa, Jukun, Hausa, Igbo, Akweya and Nyifon. 2006 census states that the state has a population of 4,253,641. The recent population is 7,992,784 while 2017 total population is around 8 million.
